The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: Hoboken Spring Fling Seeks Volunteers

Hoboken’s a pretty great place to live, for the most part, but like any other city it suffers from a bit of wear-and-tear; considering that the population’s increased incredibly over the last two decades, the infrastructure’s been stressed a bit. Anyone who’s had to wade through a flooded side street can attest to that.
Wear and tear comes in many forms, of course. One form that often gets overlooked is the slow accumulation of small problems, like trash piling up in a low-traffic public space, or paint chipping off of park benches. While problems like these might seem unimportant, over time they can build up and make our fair city look a little run-down. Which is why we’re pretty psyched to hear about the Hoboken Spring Fling.
Operation: Clean Up
Hosted and organized by the City of Hoboken Shade Tree Commission and Green Team, the 2017 Spring Fling is scheduled for Saturday, April 29th (with a rain date of Sunday April 30th), and is conceived as a “day of service” focused on cleaning the areas of our town that have suffered a bit of neglect. (Our vote: The small beach next to the Tea Building where the geese sun themselves, which is becoming a trash-filled eyesore.) Neighborhoods have tried this concept before, also, organizing a block party that kicks off with trash pickup and minor repairs. This is the same concept on a city-wide scale, and everyone in Hoboken is invited to take part, either as individual volunteers or as teams (if you volunteer as an individual, however, expect to be assigned to a team). You can sign up at the official website, and then gather at the Church Square Park gazebo on Saturday, 4/29 at 10AM (anyone of any age can volunteer, but kids younger than 16 will need a parent of guardian to accompany them. Teams have to register by April 26th. Volunteers and teams will be given assignments and will then depart to clean up trash or debris, make minor repairs or paint jobs, or some light landscaping.A Great Idea
No doubt this is one of those no-brainers—a fun, social way to serve your community and do some good—all while having some fun. If you have questions about the event, you can contact Jennifer Gonzalez (jgonzalez@hobokennj.gov) with any questions. Of course, you don’t necessarily have to wait for a special event to clean up Hoboken. Next time you’re out for a walk, take care of some tidying up!- Jeffrey Somers
