Local Hoboken Officer Opens Coffee Bar in Historical Maxwell Lane

The mile-square is known to have many cafes where individuals stop by to grab their morning java before work or simply to just get work done if they work remotely. Hudson Coffee Co. had a soft-opening on April 9 and will be more than your typical workspace.
Owned by Hoboken native and Police Officer Justin DePascale, Hudson Coffee Co. is nestled on 1100 Maxwell Lane, which happens to be a coincidental location for the space since the Maxwell Coffee House plant was once located east of Hudson Street from 11th to 12th streets in addition to a section along River Road right near 10th street and the Hudson River. DePascale was not one to consume coffee on a regular until he began working mostly evenings when assigned to the Anti/Vice Squad narcotics unit.
“It’s surprising that I went from disliking coffee to having a real passion for it now,” said DePascale. “I tasted some really bad brews during my years on the police force, so when I discovered truly good coffee, everything changed."
Once his palette was satisfied with the taste of coffee, DePascale was interested in learning as well as understanding everything about coffee. As a result, he went on the hunt for specialty coffees and desired to try different beans from all over the world. He then became a coffee lover and connoisseur as well as a businessman.
Hudson Coffee Co. is a chic and spacious coffee bar decorated with state of the art lights, vintage wallpaper, marble counters, and so much more. Since the place is committed to preserving the rich history of the Hoboken Maxwell House coffee plant, images of the coffee plant itself, Hudson waterfront shipyards, along with other recent moments in Hoboken history are hanging on the walls. Some of the images were taken by DePascale as well.
As the coffee bar tributes to the Maxwell House coffee plant, the coffee carried at Hudson Coffee Co. is completely different than the usual brands found at supermarkets since the cafe carries a premium, artisanal-style coffee blend made from some of the highest-quality beans in the world, stated DePascale. The coffee comes from Toby's Estate, a local coffee roaster in Brooklyn, and is served as early as two days after being roasted for ultimate freshness. Unique seasonal blends and single-origins, pour-over coffees that are served alongside cold brews, fine teas, lattes, espressos, cappuccinos, hot chocolates along with other beverages are also on Hudson Coffee Co.'s menu. An assortment of locally sourced croissants, muffins, pound cakes, scones, and cookies are available at the cafe as well.
“We’re committed to serving first-class coffee in a friendly, comfortable environment," said DePascale.
Aside from being a local coffee shop that professionals go to for a quick coffee run or utilize as a workspace, DePascale wants Hudson Coffee Co. to be a place where patrons can kick back and have fun. With that being said, the coffee bar will be the spot where patrons go for entertainment, open mic nights, and many other events.
Although Hudson Coffee Co. is currently opened to the public from 6 am to 9 pm, the official grand opening will take place on May 4, which will consist of a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 am with Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla and other local luminaries. Coffee, as well as other beverages, will be offered at half the price during normal business hours. All of the proceeds from the grand opening will go towards the Hoboken Police Department’s Police Benevolent Association (PBA) to purchase safety equipment for Hoboken High School, where DePascale serves as School Resource Police Officer.
