Hoboken Welcomes Sugarsuckle to the Community

Everyone’s sweet tooth is cured in Hoboken as there are so many great places to get a satisfying snack. With that being said, Sugarsuckle will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday, June 2. Sugarsuckle was founded by Jennifer Choi, who has been a Hoboken resident for ten years.
“I feel like Sugarsuckle has always been a part of me,” said Choi. “Ever since I was young, I was always making art and looking for a creative outlet.”
After graduating from college, Choi worked at a corporate office where she held a quantitative role, however, it wasn’t creative as she would have wanted it to be. Therefore, Choi began reading recipes and baking blogs during her spare time and became instantly hooked on food and its artistry.
“I realized that food could be made beautiful and too pretty to eat,” she said. “I enrolled in pastry school to get a foundation in baking.” After pastry school, Choi held roles at bakeries and restaurants, which she decided to take a break from in order to visualize her next move.
“During this downtime, friends asked me to bake cakes for their special occasions,” said Choi. “As the requests came in more frequently, I realized it could turn into a dessert catering business.”
Choi continued perfecting her craft in cake decorating and styling desserts while starting to lay the groundwork for running a business such as creating invoices, processing flow, keeping track of overhead, and so much more.
“Once I had the proof of concept down, I officially branded as Sugarsuckle and filed as a business two years ago,” she noted.
The new space will be opened for appointments only, however, Choi plans on hosting occasional retail pop-ups in the future, which will allow clients to walk-in and purchase sweets.
“I knew Sugarsuckle could be more than just an online business, even during the branding session,” said Choi. “I had a specific vision for Sugarsuckle's studio--a gathering space for unique creative experiences. The hunt for a commercial space and subsequent buildout was grueling, but the effort was all worth it.”
Currently, Sugarsuckle offers custom cakes, cupcakes, specialty cookies, and desserts in a jar. Baking classes will be held at the space in addition to it being available for private rentals.
“I'm really excited to bring a fresh and unique concept to Hoboken.,” said Choi. “Experiences that don't involve bars and restaurants are much needed and I'm hoping to bring more publicity to the southwest neighborhood.”
Sugarsuckle is located at 600 Newark Street. For more information visit their website at www.sugarsuckle.com.
