Hoboken Water Activities
It’s hard to believe, but the summer is drifting towards its end, and that means time is running out for all of us to get out and live a little in the warm weather. For many of us that automatically means a frantic plan to get in the car and go somewhere else entirely, but if you’re stuck in Hoboken or simply don’t feel like making a quest for water into a big deal, there are some options right here in town if you want to beat the heat with some water activities.

The Urban Beach

All right, it ain’t much of a beach and you can’t swim, but if you want some sand between your toes and that sense of being crowded in by a million kids slathered in sunblock but you don’t want to drive down to a shore town, this is an option. Get there early and claim a table, bring lots of snacks, and ignore the ugly stares when you, a full-grown person, romp through the water spouts, shoving kids out of the way with glee.

The Stevens Tech Pool

You can buy a pass to go swimming at the pool up at Steven’s, including drop-in rates of about $15 for the day. It’s a nice half-sized pool, but you have to check the events schedule to make sure you can get in.

Kayaking

If you just want to get on the water, check into the free kayaking at the Hoboken Cove Boathouse on the weekends. You’ll certainly get pretty wet, and it’s a lot of fun—though the time you’re allotted depends greatly on how many people show up on that day.

Pier 13

You can also go kayaking up at Pier 13—although it’s not free ($50-$100 depending on how far you go). Pier 13 also offers paddleboarding ($60-$125 depending on the class/tour you choose) and even jet skiing ($150-$425; cost includes all gear along with a brief, basic safety course in operating the jet skis). On a hot day, what could be better than tooling around the Hudson like you’re in Miami Vice? Summer is getting away from all of us, and it’s going to take some careful planning and hard work to get some water time in. Luckily, you don’t have to brave the summer traffic. Just get up, make a call, and get into the water.
