Gelato Throwdown at Bucket & Bay

RSS
Gelato Throwdown at Bucket & Bay
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you have no doubt investigated the world of gelato, and you know that gelato is not ice cream, and ice cream is not gelato (though they are, of course, very similar). Gelato is usually made with much less air and fat, while American-style ice cream can be mostly air and fat depending on the brand and how much you’re paying for it. Even in the world of gelato, of course, there’s a range of quality and taste. Recently, an invasion from neighboring Jersey City set up shop on 1st Street here in Hoboken, and if you love gelato, brace yourself, because Bucket & Bay Craft Gelato Co. may be the best you’ve ever had.

From Scratch, with Love

Located at 153 1st Street (where the Bagel Smashery used to be), Bucket & Bay is the second store opened by Jen and Boris Kavlakov. Former executives, Jen and Boris have been running the original location in Jersey City since 2015, and opened the Hoboken location in August of this year. All of their gelato is made from scratch every day in the Jersey City location, and everything is sourced from the Amish farmer’s cooperative Oasis at Bird-in-Hand, using 100% grass-fed, organic milk from heritage breed cows.
Milk and eggs in the cold case on the right.
That means the precise menu offered is going to change constantly, because it depends entirely on the ingredients they can get fresh. And if you’re wondering, yes, you can totally taste the difference. The gelato at Bucket & Bay makes any other gelato you’ve ever tried taste like trash. Well, maybe not quite that bad—but it’s easily the best gelato you’ll try.

Dairy Case & Delivery

Bucket & Bay also offers milk, eggs, and cheese from the cooperative, so you can take that high-quality dairy experience home with you, which is pretty cool. If you’re not into dairy, they also offer dairy-free sorbets as a rule (including vegan sorbets when available), and their cones are gluten-free. In other words, this is the sort of spot you can count on no matter what dietary restrictions you might be following. Most importantly, the place is friendly. It’s small, and lines can get long. But Bucket & Bay is free with the samples and friendly at all times, happy to accommodate. And if we’re talking about customer service, try this—you can get their incredible gelato delivered (up to 9th Street). Yes, delivered. No more walking to the store like an Old, now you can whip up their website on your phone and have sweet gelato in your face within the hour. HoLi’s recommendation: Get thee to Bucket & Bay and try some of this stuff. It will change your life.
